A lot of people walk into a Martial Arts Gym or a Jiu-Jitsu gym and expect one thing. Tough guys training hard, ego everywhere, and a vibe that makes you feel like you have to prove something just to be there.

I came up in that world.

I fought in the UFC. I won The Ultimate Fighter 4. I spent years competing at the highest level and training with Carlos Machado. For a long time, my life revolved around the cage and the mats in a very intense way.

When I retired from fighting I decided to focus on teaching Jiu-Jitsu. Yes I still teach MMA but I focus the bulk of my time on Jiu-Jitsu.

I wanted a place where people actually felt welcome. Where beginners didn’t feel intimidated. Where parents could bring their kids without worrying about them picking up the wrong attitude. Where serious competitors could still push their limits, but nobody was getting stepped on or talked down to.

That’s why Team Lutter BJJ feels different from a lot of other gyms in the Fort Worth and DFW area.

The Path That Shaped How We Train:

My journey wasn’t the typical straight-line black belt story. I came into Jiu-Jitsu later than most. I had already trained  in High School and college in Wrestling, then I found Jiu-Jitsu and fell in love with it. Fighting in the UFC taught me a ton about what works under pressure, but it also showed me how quickly things can go wrong when the environment or the coaching isn’t right.

After my fighting career, I kept training hard. I am still training hard today — even past 50, still aiming at competition in 2026. But the biggest lesson I took from those years wasn’t a specific submission or a highlight-reel finish. It was this:

The best results come when people feel supported, not crushed.

I’ve coached hundreds of adults and kids over the years. I’ve seen what happens when someone walks in nervous, stays because the room feels safe, and then starts to grow — in skill, confidence, and discipline. That’s the environment I wanted to build.

We focus on real, practical Jiu-Jitsu that works for self-defense, for fitness, and for competition if that’s your goal. But we do it without the ego and without making anyone feel like they don’t belong. Everyone starts in the beginner class. Learning the basics and how not to hurt themselves or someone else. From there they join the advanced class.

What Makes Team Lutter Different. I am in all the adult classes. This makes a huge difference and sets the tempo and feel for the gym. The other difference is the amount of Black belts that are in every class. Training and helping others to improve

•  No ego, just effort. Just showing up already puts you ahead of most people. We bring that same mindset to every class.

•  Everyone belongs here. Whether you’re a complete beginner who’s never stepped on the mats, a busy parent looking for a good workout, or someone who wants to compete, we meet you where you are.

•  Real coaching, real results. I’ve been doing this a long time. My coaches have the same approach. We have helped people go from zero to confident, and we’ve helped competitors reach high levels — including guys who’ve made it to the UFC and won world titles in Jiu-Jitsu.

•  A good environment matters. The mats should be a place you look forward to coming back to, not a place that beats you down mentally as well as physically.

• Our Women’s team is is very successful  my wife Erin Lutter is a big part of that. She has been training Jiu-Jitsu for almost 20 years. She is a black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. She competes in Jiu-Jitsu and is a huge part of the gym. Because of her my gym has a much larger Female Team that most Jiu-Jitsu gyms. I focus on making sure that all the girls feel safe and ok saying no to training with anyone at the gym. We have special rules for training with the girls to help make sure females can train but are not injured training.

Conclusion: I teach 6 days a week focusing on Teaching the Advanced Jiu-Jitsu Classes myself. I do this to make sure the culture and intensity of the gym is consistent. And to protect the environment. The gym is my second family.

That’s the culture we protect every single day at the gym.
