A lot of folks from Weatherford and surrounding  areas outside of Fort Worth have been reaching out lately, and they all say pretty much the same thing: “Travis, it’s a bit of a drive over to Camp Bowie, but we keep hearing good things about your place.”

I get it. I grew up on a farm myself, so I know exactly what it’s like to drive a little extra for something that matters. The truth is, that 25-35 minute trip from Weatherford to our gym at 6913 Camp Bowie Blvd #133 is nothing compared to what your family will get out of real Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training.

I’ve been doing this full-time since 1998. As a Carlos Machado black belt who fought in the UFC and won The Ultimate Fighter, I’ve seen hundreds of families make the same decision. It’s not about turning your kid into a world champion or you into a pro fighter. It’s about building confidence, discipline, fitness, and a community that actually feels like family.

Here’s the honest truth I tell every parent who’s on the fence about the drive:

1.  Safety comes first — always. I’ve had my share of injuries over the years, so we teach smart. Our beginner classes and kids programs are designed so nobody gets thrown in over their head. Parents tell me all the time how much they appreciate that.

2.  It works for the whole family. Moms, dads, teenagers, little ones — we’ve got classes for everyone. I see adults in their 40s and 50s getting stronger and more confident than they have in years, and the kids pick up focus and respect that carries straight over to school and home.

3.  The community is real. This isn’t one of those big chain gyms where you’re just a number. Our spot has always had that family atmosphere. Students cheer each other on, help the new guys, and stick around long after class. That’s why people keep driving in from Weatherford and the west side.

4.  You don’t have to live on the mats. Two or three solid classes a week is plenty. Consistency beats going hard for a month and burning out. I’m 52 now and I still roll and teach several times a week. If I can keep going after all these years, your family can too.

I’ve never had a student tell me they regretted starting Jiu-Jitsu. But I have heard plenty say they wish they’d started sooner.

If you’re in Weatherford or anywhere on the west side of Fort Worth and thinking about giving it a shot, just come try a class. Wear some workout clothes, leave the excuses at home, and we’ll take care of the rest. No pressure, no sales pitch — just good training and good people.

The mats are always open.
