Thinking about starting martial arts training but feeling nervous about walking into a gym full of experienced grapplers and fighters? You’re not alone. As a former UFC fighter and TUF veteran who has been teaching martial arts for over 28 years and running Team Lutter Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I’ve welcomed hundreds of absolute beginners—guys and girls in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond—who thought they were “too old,” “too out of shape,” or “too uncoordinated.”

The truth? Your first BJJ class is nothing like what you imagine. No one expects you to be good. Everyone remembers their own first day. And at our Fort Worth gym, we make sure absolute beginners feel welcome, safe, and excited to come back.

If you’re driving from Weatherford or anywhere in the Fort Worth area and wondering what martial arts training for beginners actually looks like, here’s exactly what to expect at Team Lutter BJJ.

Why Most People Hesitate to Start Martial Arts Training (And Why You Shouldn’t)

In my recent post “The Real Reason Most Adults Don’t Try Training Jiu-Jitsu,” I talked about how the biggest barrier isn’t your body—it’s your mind making excuses. You picture yourself getting smashed by some young MMA fighter or feeling embarrassed because you don’t know the moves.

Here’s the reality at our academy:

•  Your first class is designed for people with zero experience.

•  We have dedicated beginner-friendly sessions and coaches who break everything down simply.

•  Most of our long-time students started exactly where you are—out of shape, nervous, or coming back after years away.

I started training because  I was a Wrestler and watched a small Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu guy handle larger wrestlers than myself. I knew in that moment I had to learn Jiu-Jitsu.  Thousands of adults I’ve coached started for fitness, self-defense, stress relief, or just to prove they could do something hard. The first step is always the same: just show up.

What to Wear and Bring to Your First Martial Arts Class

You don’t need fancy gear for day one. Keep it simple:

•  For BJJ/Grappling: Wear a clean t-shirt and athletic shorts or sweatpants (no zippers, pockets, or drawstrings that can catch). Women often wear rash guards or compression tops for comfort.

•  For striking/Muay Thai or kickboxing classes: Same comfortable workout clothes—shorts and t-shirt. If you have gloves bring them. We’ll provide gloves if needed for your intro.

•  Footwear: No shoes on the mat. Bring flip-flops or slides to wear off the mat.

•  Other essentials: Water bottle, towel, and a positive attitude. Deodorant is appreciated by everyone.

Pro tip: Arrive 10–15 minutes early. This gives you time to fill out a quick waiver, meet the coach, and get comfortable. Our address is 6913 Camp Bowie Blvd, Suite 133, Fort Worth, TX 76116. Plenty of parking.

Call 817-781-4243 or visit our site to reserve your first class—we often offer a free trial or intro session so you can test the waters with no pressure.

Walking Into Team Lutter BJJ for the First Time

When you arrive, expect a welcoming, no-frills environment focused on real training and community. We’ll show you around, point out where the change room is, and introduce you to a few people.

Don’t worry about bowing or complicated rituals—basic respect and hygiene go a long way. Wipe your feet, keep your nails trimmed, and come ready to learn. The vibe here is straightforward: work hard, support each other, and get better together.

Many beginners are surprised how friendly the room feels. Yes, there are serious athletes and competitors, but there are also teachers, engineers, parents, and folks just like you who train to stay fit and clear their heads.

The Structure of a Typical Beginner Martial Arts Training Class

A standard class at Team Lutter BJJ lasts about 60 minutes and follows this flow:

1.  Warm-Up (10–15 minutes)
Light jogging, dynamic stretches, bodyweight movements (shrimping, bridging, hip escapes), and BJJ-specific drills. This isn’t brutal—it’s designed to get blood flowing and teach fundamental movements you’ll use all the time. Even if you’re not super flexible yet, you’ll improve fast.

2.  Technique Instruction (20–30 minutes)
The coach demonstrates one or two fundamental moves slowly. On day one, you might learn basics like:

    •  Proper posture and base

    •  How to break fall safely

    •  A simple escape or control position (e.g., how to maintain side control or defend your guard)

    •  Basic grips and framing
Everything is broken down step-by-step. You’ll drill with a partner—often another beginner or a patient upper belt who knows how to help without overwhelming you.

3.  Live Training / Rolling (Optional for First-Timers)
For absolute beginners, we keep this light or positional. You might start with guided scenarios instead of full sparring. No one is trying to “win” on your first day—the goal is learning and staying safe.

4.  Cool-Down and Wrap-Up
Stretching, maybe a quick review, and Q&A. Class ends on time so you can get on with your day.

Classes are supervised closely. Safety is non-negotiable—we tap early and often, and we scale intensity for beginners.

Common Feelings After Your First Martial Arts Training Session

•  Sore, but in a good way: You’ll use muscles you didn’t know you had. Expect some bruises or mat burn—that’s normal.

•  Mentally tired (in the best way): BJJ is like chess with your body. Your brain works as hard as your muscles.

•  Accomplished: Most people leave smiling, even if they got tapped a dozen times. You just did something most people only talk about.

In the first 30 days, you’ll notice better mobility, clearer thinking under pressure, and growing confidence. I’ve seen students lose significant weight, manage stress better, and even reverse some “I’m too old for this” thinking.
